This area of London around Old Spitalfields and Brick Lane markets is fascinating to explore. Fourniere Street in particular is a very beautiful old road. Very fashionable and expensive now, it was once a slum area where prostitutes plied their trade. My research was more about texture and architecture rather than fashion. There were weavers in Spitalfields, found Shuttle Street, but Weavers Street had been demolished. There were silk weavers in Fournier Street, Huguenots escaping religious persecution.
I have two friends, who have stalls at the market on a Thursday, selling second hand goods, junk. Father and daughter, Richard and Jo Waterhouse.
My fashion shoot was inspired by the stall holders. I set up a market stall in the kitchen using junk shop finds. My family and friends modelled for me.
Stall holders at Spitalfilds. The gentleman in the top hat is Colin Rosie, he is beautifully dressed, with his hat, matching jacket, trousers and waistcoat. Once homeless, Colin is now a successful stall holder at Spitalfields selling his multi coloured top hats.
